CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Department crews were dispatched Wednesday evening after a fire broke out at an apartment building on Gore Avenue, resulting in one occupant being displaced.

According to a news release from Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson, approximately 15 firefighters from Halls 1 (Cheam Avenue, 4 (South Sumas) and 6 (Greendale) were dispatched at about 6 p.m. for an apartment fire. Responding crews arrived on scene and witnessed black smoke emanating from a second floor balcony. Wilson says crews set up a water supply and employed an offensive attack that quickly extinguished the fire. Crews continued to overhaul the fire and assisted in ventilating smoke from the building.

Wilson says the fire had the potential to spread rapidly to adjacent apartment units in the building, but firefighters were able to contain it and stop it from spreading beyond the unit of origin.

Emergency Support Services (ESS) volunteers responded to the scene and provided support to one displaced occupant. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported at this fire, and the fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department officials.
