CHILLIWACK — Environment Canada warned last week of an incoming atmospheric river weather system that would produce “prolonged heavy rain” to British Columbia’s south coast over the election weekend.

The national forecaster was not only correct, but the heavy rains set multiple records across the Fraser Valley, including Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Agassiz, Hope and Langley, on Saturday.

Environment Canada says it recorded 89.1 millimetres (3.5 inches) of precipitation in Chilliwack Saturday, breaking the old record of 72.6 mm set in 1956. Records in Chilliwack have been kept since 1895.

Over in Abbotsford, 82.1 mm of rain fell Saturday, eclipsing the previous mark of 72.6 mm set in 1966.
