ABBOTSFORD – A driver escaped serious injury after a vehicle caught fire following a crash just south of Abbotsford Airport.

Abbotsford police (APD) say the vehicle hydroplaned into a power pole just before 5:30 a.m. on Sunday on Huntingdon Road, between Townline Road and Hamm Street.

Const. Jody Thomas said power lines were knocked down in the collision.

“The lone driver exited the vehicle before it caught fire and was fully engulfed,” Thomas said.

“The driver had minor injuries and one vehicle was involved.”

The incident closed a portion of Huntingdon Road for several hours as crews repaired the power lines.

BC Hydro estimated that about 550 customers in an area bounded by Huntingdon Road, the border, Mount Lehman Road, and McCallum Road were affected by a power outage.

Huntingdon Road reopened to traffic late Sunday morning, according to APD.

As of noon Sunday, hydro crews said power to some 200 people still needed to be restored.
