HERRLING ISLAND — B.C. Highway Patrol says it has laid a charge under the Motor Vehicle Accident after an SUV lost control on Highway 1 east of Chilliwack and wound up in a ditch, resulting in the closure of the highway last weekend.

According to a statement from B.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, the collision happened Saturday, October 5 at about 2:45 p.m., when a single sports utility vehicle lost control near a corner and came to rest in a ditch. The vehicle sustained serious damage, but the driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was not hurt.

“BC Highway Patrol wants to remind you that the best way to avoid collisions is with safe habits: First, you need to slow down. Next, remove tempting distractions like cell phones, food, or makeup. Focus on driving,” said Cpl. McLaughlin.

After reviewing the circumstances of this crash, BC Highway Patrol says it has issued the driver with a violation ticket for driving without consideration under section 144(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Act. The driving offence carries a $196 fine and six points against the driver’s licence.

Police say traffic slowed to a crawl on Highway 1 near Herrling Island Saturday following a single-vehicle crash. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano said a white SUV left the roadway just before 3 p.m. and crashed into a guardrail. The driver was uninjured and refused aid from Chilliwack firefighters after exiting the SUV. Urano said speed was a factor in the crash, and that an early probe is showing no signs of impairment.
