ABBOTSFORD – A drive to raise awareness of intimate partner violence in Abbotsford and Mission kicked off this weekend and will be the subject of multiple events in the coming week.

The 13th annual Purple Lights Nights campaign, recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, began with a kickoff event at Jubilee Park during Saturday’s farmers market.

Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens, joined by several councillors, addressed the crowd, reiterating the city’s commitment to the Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) task force, which launched three decades ago.

Residents also filled a newly commissioned Purple Abbotsford Police Cruiser with much-needed supplies for women and children fleeing intimate partner violence.

Other Purple Lights Nights gatherings on the weekend included two fitness events in Mission: yoga at Oxygen and ‘Fit Therapy’ at the Friendship Centre.

Numerous events in and around the region, including a ‘Week of Wellness’ at the University of the Fraser Valley this week, will provide opportunities to show support through the purchase of a Purple Lights Nights t-shirt.

Updates on the campaign can be found on Instagram and Facebook.
