CHILLIWACK — Agricultural research, an inclusion and equity strategy, and a student wellness program are new partnerships the University of Fraser Valley’s (UFV) Chilliwack campus will take on in the coming year.

The collaborations, along with community awards, were revealed to about 250 students, staff, and community members at a Thursday event dubbed the ‘St’elt’elawtexw: A Celebration of Community.’

Prospera Credit Union and the Prospera Foundation are investing $500,000 into student wellness programming over the next three years, while Coast Capital will provide a $125,000 gift to support an inclusion and equity strategy addressing the needs of non-traditional students in the trades.

Meanwhile, Auguston Town Developments Inc. will contribute $80,000 to fund agricultural research with UFV’s Food and Agriculture Institute.

UFV President Dr. Joanne MacLean thanked longtime partners and supporters on Thursday, with some receiving commemorative paddles recognizing organizations with more than 15 years of giving.

“Every day I hear inspiring stories about the commitment and ingenuity across all our campuses,” MacLean said. “We want to recognize the contributions of our valued community partners and many supporters who helped make these inspiring stories possible.”

The Free Store Chilliwack received the Betty Urquhart Community Service Award for partnering with local farms to minimize food waste.

Free Store volunteers take surplus produce, meat, dairy, bread, and non-perishables and distribute them to more than 100 families in need each weekend at no charge.

The Alumni Association also presented three awards on Thursday to former UFV students.

More details on the event can be found online at the University’s community report page.
