VICTORIA – Elections BC says independent candidate Shelly Jan has withdrawn in Langley-Abbotsford, even though her name will still appear on voting ballots during the election.

The non-partisan Office of the Legislature confirmed the departure on Wednesday, leaving five candidates vying for the riding in the October election.

“Under the Election Act, a candidate may withdraw from an election at any time up until 48 hours before the start of advance voting,” Elections BC said in a statement.

Advance voting starts on Thursday, October 10, and runs until the 16th.

The general election voting day is October 19.

Jan’s withdrawal wasn’t soon enough to have her name stricken from ballots that have already been printed, which happened on September 29.

The former candidate will still appear on the ballot for Langley-Abbotsford.

Election officials say signage will be posted at voting places announcing Jan’s withdrawal.

The list of candidates vying for Langley-Abbotsford is now down to five. They are:

  • John Aldag — BC NDP
  • Harman Bhangu — Conservative Party
  • Alex Joehl — Libertarian
  • Karen Long — Independent
  • Melissa Snazell — BC Green Party

Ballots can be cast between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. during the advance voting period from Oct. 10 through 13 and Oct. 15 through 16.

Note that district electoral offices will be closed for Thanksgiving on Monday, Oct. 14.

The general election day is Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
