ABBOTSFORD — A man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after he stabbed a Chilliwack man on Yale Road in Chilliwack in May 2016 has died in custody at an Abbotsford prison.

According to a news release from Correctional Service Canada, 72-year-old Gerald Leslie Dolman died Tuesday (Sept. 24) at the Regional Treatment Centre (Pacific Institution). CSC says at the time of his passing, Dolman had been serving an indeterminate sentence since December 1, 2017.

According to published media reports, Dolman was charged with second-degree murder after he stabbed a man in the 46000 block of Yale Road in May 2016. Dolman stabbed Robert Splitt in broad daylight near a Chilliwack parking lot. Media reports suggest the case involved a squabble between Dolman and Splitt and a woman.

As with all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC will undertake a review of the circumstances. CSC policy mandates that the coroner be notified.
