CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack-Kent NDP MLA Kelli Paddon is looking to hire some extra help between now and election day next month.

According to a job description posted Tuesday night (Sept. 24) on Indeed, BC NDP in Chilliwack- Cultus Lake is recruiting enthusiastic foot canvassers, or poll cats, to connect with voters for the upcoming provincial election. The job posting describes the temporary position as “a great position for a person who’s interested in progressive politics and campaigns — and a great opportunity to be a part of the winning team at the BC NDP.”

Candidates will be contacting past NDP supporters and previously uncontacted voters at their residences through door-to-door canvassing in various communities and asking them to vote for the B.C. NDP in the upcoming election. Candidates will also engage with potential volunteers.

Responsibilities consist of conducting conversations with voters by following a script; providing information about the NDP to voters; following a walking route and visiting addresses on a list; inputting data in real-time; and abiding by strict daily reporting schedule

Candidates will need to excel at quickly building rapport with people they don’t know in face-to-face settings, with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to successfully relate to voters and volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds; orally communicate in English; maintain details and compiling accurate records; entering routine data; maintain professionalism in a fast-paced role and time management skills; and be thoughtful, respectful, and assertive in verbal communication while working independently and in team settings.

Bonus points go to candidates who are well-versed in mobile canvassing apps, have access to a smart phone or tablet, have some degree of experience with voter contact and/or door-to-door solicitation, knowledge of current events and political issues in British Columbia, and the ability to speak a second language like Mandarin, Cantonese or Punjabi.

The compensation is $25.67 an hour, and available shifts are typically 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. Interested candidates need to apply by email by using the subject line of “Foot Canvasser” and send their email to Kelli.Paddon@bcndp.ca.
