CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack has notified the public about its intent to extend a design award to Vernon-based MQN Architects for a new pickleball facility.

According to a notice on the city’s tenders and bids website, the value of the design award has been calculated at an estimated $226,485.

The City of Chilliwack wrote in its public notification that it intended to award this design work directly because significant funds have already been spent on the pre-design phase of the project. The city said pre-design work enabled the municipality to obtain estimated costs, quantitative surveys and pre-approvals completed so that it could have the project approved by council. The city also said that if it hired a different company than MQN Architects, it would require duplicating these expenditures. The city noted $30,000 has been spent on pre-design work with MQN Architects, while $40,000 has been spent on various sub-consultant engineering firms.

The new pickleball facility will be located between the Landing Sports Centre and Exhibition Field. A staff report will be coming to an October meeting with full details about the multi-use facility.

To satisfy the growing demand for a facility given the city’s rapid population growth and surging interest in the sport, the City of Chilliwack has had a pickleball facility in its sights for quite some time now.

The Chilliwack Pickleball Club (CPC) stands to benefit from the proposed facility. The club was established in April 2017 and has grown to over 375 members who play multiple days a week on several pickleball courts. According to its website, group members are “delighted to have the largest indoor pickleball facility in the Fraser Valley of BC.” Their current indoor venue is the Landing facility at 45530 Spadina Avenue. Other pickleball locations include Portage Park, G.W. Graham, Rosedale Community School, and Promontory School. Rosedale and Promontory School locations feature evening play.
