Chilliwack Chiefs finish preseason with 3-0 mark, including thrilling overtime goal from Caleb Malhotra

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Chiefs capped off their third and final preseason game Sunday with a 3-2 overtime win over the Surrey Eagles, last year’s Fred Page Cup champions.

Chilliwack dominated the opening period by outshooting the Eagles 14-3. Savin Virk scored the Chiefs’ first goal to make it four goals in three preseason games.

Surrey notched their first goal in the second period after a Chiefs turnover at the top of the offensive zone. That enabled Jackson Anderson to race away on a breakaway and score past Chiefs goaltender Sebastian Gatto.

Both teams traded goals in the third period. Brady Milburn scored first for the Chiefs on an unassisted goal off an Eagles turnover, while Surrey’s equalizer came on a score from Ryan White, thrusting the game into a 2-2 overtime.

Caleb Malhotra showed Chiefs fans what he could do in the overtime session. Malhotra got a hold of the puck, gained speed through the neutral zone before veering into Eagles territory, split their defensive pair and made a miraculous effort to shoot the puck top corner, from his knees no less. Malhotra, the Chiefs rookie, has now come up with two game winners in overtimes for the Chiefs in their preseason.

The regular season starts this Friday, September 20 in Coquitlam, before the Chiefs play host to the Prince George Spruce Kings, Saturday, September 21 for the team’s home opener. Doors open at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the puck dropping at 6 p.m.
