LANGLEY — A Lower Mainland mission officially opened its new 57-acre women’s refuge in South Langley this weekend.

A ceremony on Saturday marked the transfer of the Cedar Haven Women’s Recovery Centre to the Union Gospel Mission (UGM), which will now operate the facility after peer service provider Wagner Hills stepped aside to focus on a men’s recovery strategy.

The location offers trauma-informed recovery in a serene rural setting for addiction, with 11 beds, a pottery studio, a gymnasium, and farm animals.

“Our hope is that women will be able to find rest and healing, surrounded by caring staff and an environment that feels safe and removed from overwhelming stressors,” UGM vice-president of women and families programming, Tara MacDonald, said.

“This is the first rural women’s recovery centre that Union Gospel Mission has opened so far, and we’re so excited to see how it enriches women’s lives in B.C.”

The facility began offering its services in July, incorporating its women’s programming. Union Gospel Mission is one of B.C.’s leading recovery service providers, with locations in Vancouver and Victoria.
