CHILLIWACK — A team of riders made up of police, paramedics and other emergency service personnel are now on the road in an effort to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

The 25th annual Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley hit the road Friday for eight days of cycling that will cover 800 kilometres of the Fraser Valley.

With a fundraising goal set at $320,000, riders will travel through the valley from Tsawwassen to Langley, Aldergrove to Chilliwack and from Hope to Boston Bar.

“Cops for Cancer is the largest national fundraiser for pediatric cancer research and pediatric support programs in Canada,” retired RCMP officer Krista Vrolyk said.

“The money we raise funds leading-edge cancer research and support programs like Camp Goodtimes, where kids with cancer can ‘just be kids.’”

Other stops include Save-On Foods Cottonwood in Chilliwack at noon and District 1881 Courtyard meet and greet around 3 p.m.

The grind will continue with routes between Hope and Boston Bar Sunday. The team is expected to complete the entire journey on Sept. 20.
