CHILLIWACK — The Valley Huskers improved to 3-3 on the season with a much needed 31-11 victory over the visiting Prince George Kodiaks in a Canadian Junior Football League matchup Saturday night at Exhibition Field.

According to information compiled by assistant coach Ryk Piché, the Huskers dominated the Kodiaks by recording 464 yards of total offence, thanks in part to running back Jawad Harb, who had 189 rushing yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.

The Huskers turned to third-string quarterback Noah Makkreel after backup quarterback Jacob Davies suffered a lower-body injury just before halftime. Makkreel made the most of his opportunity by completing 7 of 11 passes for 130 yards, and handling the Kodiaks’ pressure admirably, though he did throw one interception. The Huskers’ receiving corps also contributed explosive plays, as Luc Rodrigues, Payton Lake, and Steven Koniuck each hauled in over 30-yard catches, stretching the Kodiaks’ defence.

“That was a character-building win for us,” Huskers coach Bob Reist said. “We had to battle through injuries and tough situations to win a critical game. We were in a tight game and learned how to win in these situations. That will help us down the road. Give credit to PG, they were desperate and played hard the whole game.”

The defence came up with a spectacular play when linebacker Jon Banal picked up a fumble and returned it 109 yards for a touchdown to electrify the Huskers’ sideline. Banal also recorded an interception and 4.5 tackles.

The Huskers were able to impose their will against the PG offence. In addition to linebacker Banal’s incredible fumble return, linebacker Andy Ofosuhene added another sack to his tally, contributing to the team’s strong defensive stand.

On special teams, kicker Gabe Yaipen contributed with consistent extra points after touchdowns and capping off his performance with an important three-point field goal.

The Huskers now look ahead to their next challenge, a road game against the Kamloops Broncos (1-5) this Sunday afternoon.

“We go back on the road this weekend to face another team that’s hungry for a win,” Coach Reist said. “We expect another tough battle this week and look forward to the opportunity.”
