Update: Langley man drowns at Cultus Lake, body recovered

UPDATE AT 1:45 P.M. MONDAY: The Upper Fraser Valley/Chilliwack RCMP announced at 10:36 a.m. Monday morning that the body of a Langley man has been recovered after a drowning Saturday at Entrance Bay at Cultus Lake. According to a statement from police, Mounties say a man had gone into the water and failed to resurface. Bystanders in the area immediately began searching for the man but were unable to locate him.

Chilliwack RCMP, Chilliwack Search and Rescue, Cultus Lake Fire Department, and BC Emergency Health Services were dispatched to assist in the rescue efforts. An extensive search was conducted both on foot and by boat but the man was not located on Saturday.

The BC RCMP Dive Team attended on Sunday, September 8, and was able to locate and recover the man’s body. The B.C. Coroners Service attended the scene and confirmed there were no indications of foul play. The man’s next of kin has been notified.

“The Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank all those who assisted with the search,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson. “We have actively engaged our victim services team to support the family after this tragic incident.”

UPDATE AT 8:48 A.M. MONDAY: Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Teresa Parsons told Fraser Valley Today in a brief email Monday morning that a man drowned at Cultus Lake on Saturday. More details will be provided in a media release later today, Cpl. Parsons said.

CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for BC Emergency Health Services says no patient was transported to hospital Saturday after multiple first responders were called to Cultus Lake for a drowning.

According to scanner traffic and witness descriptions, Cultus Lake Fire, Chilliwack RCMP, BC EHS and Chilliwack Search and Rescue were dispatched for a drowning at Cultus Lake near the Jade Bay boat launch. Cultus Lake Fire Department activated at least three units, including Engine 1, Rescue 1 and Marine 1.

Chilliwack RCMP reportedly had its own marine unit deployed, according to a witness at Cultus Lake.

Jenny Peng, spokesperson for BC EHS, said paramedics were dispatched at roughly 3:45 p.m. Saturday.

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 3:44 p.m. on Sept. 7 about an incident at Cultus Lake. Two ground ambulances with primary care paramedics, a ground ambulance with advanced care paramedics and an air ambulance with critical care paramedics attended the scene. No patient was transported to hospital,” Peng said.

The victim may have been a 40-year-old male per scanner traffic, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.
