UPDATE: Vedder Mountain Road has reopened and power has been restored to Cultus Lake customers.

CHILLIWACK — An overnight motor vehicle accident has left over 1,200 customers in Chilliwack and Cultus Lake without power Sunday morning.

According to BC Hydro, 1,207 customers have been without power since 3:55 a.m. due to an unspecified motor vehicle accident. Power is expected to be restored by noon today. Crews are currently on site. The BC Hydro website was last updated at 7:35 a.m.

The affected area includes most of Cultus Lake as well as the area due north of the lake, including Columbia Valley Highway, parts of Soowahlie First Nation and Vedder Mountain Road.

Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock, who monitors overnight scanner traffic as part of her graveyard delivery job, says a vehicle reportedly took out a power pole and rolled off the road and down an embankment sometime before 4 a.m. At least two Chilliwack Fire Department engines were dispatched for the incident, Hiscock says.

Vedder Mountain Road just west of the Vedder Bridge is currently closed as a result of the accident, meaning people who wish to go to Cultus Lake from Chilliwack will need to take the Keith Wilson Road bridge over to Yarrow and into Cultus Lake that way.
