CHILLIWACK — A beautiful Golden retriever that was mysteriously found in the Deroche/Mission area sometime over the summer and never claimed has made a remarkable comeback.

The Chilliwack SPCA says it received an outpouring of support and attention after a 10-year-old dog named Belle was located on Bell Road in Deroche. Chilliwack SPCA posted on August 21 that the Golden Retriever was located in an area that was far too remote for Belle to have just wandered off.

In the days thereafter, the SPCA said it received over 1,000 messages of support, or from people sharing, Belle’s remarkable situation.

“We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has commented, sent messages of support, and shared Belle’s story—over 1,000 of you! Your kindness and support mean the world to us,” the SPCA said. “As you may know, no one came forward to claim Belle.”

What people didn’t necessarily know in the ensuing days since her discovery was that Belle suffered from a severe and potentially deadly pyometra infection. The infection causes the uterus to fill up with bacteria and pus, according to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

“Fortunately, she was discovered in time and rushed to the emergency vet hospital where she received the crucial care she needed, including life-saving surgery,” Chilliwack SPCA said Thursday, Sept. 5.

Belle pulled through the surgery and is now recovering “beautifully” in foster care, Chilliwack SPCA said. Once she is fully healed, she will be ready for adoption by a very lucky individual or family.

“Stay tuned for updates on this brave and loving girl. Thank you again for all your support and for helping us give Belle the second chance she deserves,” Chilliwack SPCA said.
