CHILLIWACK — A low-pressure system that moved through southern B.C. from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon brought heavy rain and strong wind gusts, leading to new daily precipitation records in several communities on Saturday (Aug. 24).

New precipitation records were set in Agassiz, Abbotsford, and Hope. Agassiz saw 57.5 mm of rain on Saturday, smashing the previous record of 36 mm set in 2004. In Abbotsford, 39.5 mm of rainfall broke the 2008 record of 26 mm. Hope’s 2004 record of 18 mm was surpassed by Saturday’s 37 mm.

According to Environment Canada, Agassiz received a total of 81 mm of rain from Friday through Saturday. Cultus Lake recorded 63 mm, while Chilliwack saw 61 mm of precipitation. The Hope airport registered 54 mm of rain, and Abbotsford’s airport received 45 mm.

The BC River Forecast Centre lifted advisories on Sunday that had been issued late last week. The high streamflow advisories were in place due to concerns that rivers in the region could experience rapid rises because of the heavy rainfall.

The most dangerous wind gusts produced by the system struck interior sections of the province. Environment Canada recorded wind gusts of 93 km/h. The storm led to several downed trees in the city. No serious injuries were reported.
