Clock ticking as BC Transit announces date when all legacy fare products in Chilliwack will switch to new Umo app

Aug 13, 2024 | 12:04 PM

CHILLIWACK — BC Transit now says it will stop the sale of legacy fare products like scratch-off DayPASS, 10-ride tickets, monthly passes and Semester Pass this fall as it transitions to app-enabled alternatives in Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz-Harrison.

According to an email from BC Transit spokesperson Erin Moore, BC Transit will stop the sale of these specific legacy fare products effective October 1 in favour of what it calls “convenient Umo-enabled alternatives.”

Chilliwack Transit prices:

  • Umo cash balance – $2
  • Single ride – Adult, $2
  • Single ride – Concession, $1.75
  • DayPASS – Adult, $5
  • DayPASS – Concession, $4
  • 10 Single Rides – Adult, $18
  • 10 Single Rides – Concession, $15.75
  • 30-Day Pass – Adult, $44
  • 30-Day Pass – Concession, $35
  • Student Semester Pass – $112

Fraser Valley Express (FVX 66) prices:

  • Umo cash balance – $5
  • FVX 10 Single Rides – $45
  • FVX 30-Day Pass – Adult, $100
  • FVX 30-Day Pass – Concession, $85

BC Transit says fare products can be loaded in the Umo app, to a reloadable Umo card in-person through a BC Transit Umo retail vendor, online at ca.umopass.com, or through Umo customer service at 877-380-8181. Cash and the province of British Columbia’s BC Bus Pass will continue to be accepted.

U-PASS fare products will continue to be offered in collaboration with the University of the Fraser Valley via Umo payment methods. Legacy tickets and pass fare products will be accepted until used up. A new Umo compatible Token will be available to support the needs of social wellness organizations that offer free or discounted fare products.

Improved Umo Enabled Fare Products

  • Umo Cash Balance, an alternative to cash, is a pre-paid dollar value loaded to the Umo app or reloadable card. A Cash Balance value is drawn from as riders take trips and can be used to purchase a pass fare product. Cash Balance fares can be used in any transit system and on the 66 Fraser Valley Express.
  • 10 Rides, replacing paper ticket fare products, is available at the same discounted price and eliminates the need to collect and retain paper transfer slips. Instead, riders can now simply scan or tap their Umo payment method on their second bus within a 90-minute transfer window and continue to travel within the Chilliwack Transit System without an additional charge.
  • DayPASS, replacing the scratch-off paper DayPASS fare product, provides unlimited all-day travel privileges locally and regionally across the and across the Agassiz-Harrison and Hope transit systems. Riders travelling on multiple buses outside the 90-minute transfer window are recommended to purchase a DayPASS. DayPASS fare products are not accepted on the 66 Fraser Valley Express.
  • 30-Day Passes, replacing Monthly Pass fare products, can be activated on any day of the month and provides riders with unlimited local trips within their transit system during a continuous 30-day period. A 30-Day Pass activates on first use, not when purchased.

Riders who have not yet switched to a Umo payment method and fare product are encouraged to visit bctransit.com/umo for a comprehensive introduction to adopting Umo, including video tutorials on using the Umo Mobility App and reloadable Umo card. BC Transit’s Umo customer service call centre is live for support at 877-380-8181 toll-free. At a future date, BC Transit plans to provincially enable onboard payments with debit and credit cards.
