CHILLIWACK — Despite a fierce lightning storm that delivered 108 strikes in the Coastal Fire Centre Sunday (Aug. 12), the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports that only five new wildfires were spotted in the eastern section of the Coastal Fire Centre, and none are threatening structures or infrastructure.

As of Monday afternoon, the BCWS reports two fires burning out of control in the vicinity of Chilliwack.

The Harrison Hill wildfire, north of Chilliwack, started on Friday when a lightning bolt struck a tree. Due to the steep terrain where the fire is located, the BCWS attacked the fire from the air over the weekend. As of Monday afternoon, there is no noticeable smoke rising from the fire, but helicopters continue to monitor the area. While it is still listed as being out of control, the fire has not grown and has burned less than a hectare of forest since being initially spotted.

The Mount Edgar wildfire, east of Chilliwack Lake, continues to have an Initial Attack team assigned to it. It also began on Friday due to lightning. The BCWS doesn’t have an update on the size of the fire, but on Sunday, it was listed as being under one hectare. A pair of tree fallers are also working with firefighters on the blaze.
