Former Chilliwack trustee files court appeal after losing defamation lawsuit to current SD33 trustee
CHILLIWACK — Former Chilliwack School District trustee Barry Neufeld has filed an appeal after losing a defamation lawsuit brought by current SD33 trustee Dr. Carin Bondar.
According to legal paperwork obtained by Fraser Valley Today, Neufeld’s appeal was filed Friday, August 2 with the British Columbia Court of Appeal.
Neufeld was ordered in April 2024 to pay Dr. Carin Bondar, a current SD33 trustee, $45,000 by Justice K. Michael Stephens after losing a defamation lawsuit.
Referring to Dr. Bondar’s past videos about science that some saw as provocative in nature, Neufeld argued in his statement of facts within the appeal: “If this judgment is correct, people expressing honestly held views about whether particular performances are strip-tease may now be punished if a judge takes a different view. This exceeds the purpose of defamation law, sends a chilling message to participants in the public arena and undermines freedom of expression.”
