Fraser Health warning Chilliwack and Abbotsford residents of threats from heat

Aug 4, 2024 | 12:24 PM

CHILLIWACK — Fraser Valley residents are bracing for a hot end to the holiday weekend. While temperatures are forecast to reach the high 20s Celsius, the rising humidity could make it feel as warm as 35°C on Monday in Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

The Fraser Health Authority is cautioning residents about the heat, noting that some people are more vulnerable. Those who may need extra care include people over age 60, individuals living alone, those with certain health conditions or disabilities, substance users, people on specific medications, pregnant individuals, and young children.

To prevent heat-related illnesses, spending time in a cool space is crucial. Residents are encouraged to seek air-conditioned places such as libraries, community centres, or cafes. Other tips include taking cold showers, soaking your feet and legs in a cool bath, drinking plenty of water, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
