CHILLIWACK — Members of the Chilliwack Fire Department were called into action early Sunday (Jul. 28) morning.

A call for a structure fire in the 45000 block of Hodgins Avenue was received around 3:30 a.m.

The fire was across the street from the Chilliwack Coliseum.

The Chilliwack Fire Department said approximately 40 firefighters from Halls 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 responded to the blaze and were able to knock down the flames before the fire could spread to other homes in the neighbourhood.

Witnesses at the scene say the fire occurred in a townhouse.

While there were no injuries in the fire, fire officials say three families have lost their homes.

Fire crews also found that smoke alarms were not working in all of the units. Fire officials are urging residents to test their smoke alarms monthly and replace them as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Each level of a home should have smoke detectors as well as every sleeping area. Smoke detectors can be connected together so that when one detector goes off, all others will as well.

The Fire Department says there were no injuries to the occupants or the firefighters.
