ABBOTSFORD — John Aldag, a longtime advocate for Canadian parks and and former M.P., has officially accepted the BC NDP nomination in Langley-Abbotsford for the upcoming provincial election in the fall. Aldag was elected twice in the federal riding of Surrey-Cloverdale, resigning as a Liberal M.P. in May to run for the NDP in the provincial vote.

A news release from the BC NDP says Aldag grew up on a prairie farm, where he learned the values of kindness, hard work, and the significance of rural communities in food security and prosperity. In 2005, he and his family settled in Langley. Elected to federal office in 2015 and again in 2021, Aldag served seven years in the Liberal government in Ottawa.

“The people of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley have experienced a lot in the last few years, from a global pandemic to 2021’s devastating floods and the washouts of Highway 1 and Highway 7. We understand why it’s so critical to have a government that’s in your corner,” Aldag said. “The BC NDP has taken action to improve the Valley’s security and prosperity, including a $300 million investment in food security and climate resilience for food producers.”

Since taking office in July 2017, the BC NDP has addressed key issues for Langley-Abbotsford residents, including:

Premier David Eby praised Aldag’s federal achievements, including bills addressing firefighter-related cancers and complex files from Natural Resources to Indigenous Affairs. “The people of Langley-Abbotsford can count on him to put that experience to work for them,” Eby said.

Aldag will join Eby and 91 other BC NDP candidates in this fall’s provincial election.
