BC Wildfire Service bracing for increasing wildfire activity
VANCOUVER — The BC Wildfire Service is preparing for intensified wildfire activity as thunderstorms and strong winds are forecast to sweep across parts of tinder-dry areas of the province. As of Saturday (Jul. 20) morning, over 300 wildfires are burning across British Columbia, with half classified as out of control.
The Shetland Creek fire near Spences Bridge is particularly concerning. Evacuation orders and alerts have been issued for Spences Bridge, Ashcroft, and parts of Cache Creek. Ashcroft declared a state of local emergency Friday, leading to the evacuation of several properties.
Interior Health has relocated 21 residents from a long-term care home and five clients from an assisted living facility. The health authority is ensuring evacuees have access to necessary services.
Ashcroft Mayor Barbara Roden says residents are feeling anxious after the Shetland Creek fire doubled in size within 24 hours, to approximately 132 square kilometers.
