HERRLING ISLAND — A power outage possibly connected to the 1-hectare fire northeast of Chilliwack has left over 160 customers without power Monday morning (July 15).

According to the BC Hydro website, 165 customers lost power at 6:33 a.m. Monday due to wires down. Power is expected to be restored by 4 p.m. this afternoon.

The power outage appears to be connected to this morning’s fire.

According to scanner traffic early Monday morning, there are unconfirmed reports that a BC Hydro pole caught fire between Herrling Island and Peters Road at around 6:30 a.m. Monday morning and spread to nearby trees. Agassiz Fire, Popkum Fire and B.C. Wildfire Service were all dispatched this morning to combat the fast-spreading fire. It started off as a small fire and grew to a hectare in size, attracting a significant response from local and provincial fire crews, including a helicopter.
