New equipment to help babies, pediatric patients arrives at Abbotsford Hospital
ABBOTSFORD — Health care professionals can find it challenging to locate veins in humans, particularly in babies and pediatric patients who may have even harder veins to see and locate.
New equipment at Abbotsford Regional Hospital could be a game-changer for health care workers thanks to funding from the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation.
The foundation says Abbotsford Regional Hospital has recently received state of the art equipment for maternal, child, infant and youth patients in care at hospital. Elizabeth Harris, executive director of the foundation, says the foundation is “especially pleased to fund this simple and easy-to-use technology, which will most definitely help improve patient experience.”
The new vein finder is a handheld device that employs infrared light to help identify and locate veins beneath the skin, making the process a lot smoother than previous methods. The new easy-to-use equipment is safe, efficient and will inevitably help create a calmer experience for patients. The foundation reports that one of the nurses of the unit described how thankful she was for the vein finder. A patient who was recently in triage did not have visible veins for health care workers to locate, but the vein finder handheld device enabled staff to easily find the patient’s veins and start an IV, increasing the patient’s morale immediately.
