Eby’s style leads to re-election leadership concerns

VICTORIA — Former B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver says the recent decisions of several veteran New Democrat cabinet ministers to not seek re-election this fall indicate dissatisfaction with Premier David Eby’s leadership style.

Weaver highlighted the difference between Eby and former NDP Premier John Horgan, noting that Eby appears to control the government tightly from his office, while Horgan allowed cabinet ministers more autonomy.

Among the NDP veterans not running in the October 19 election is Environment Minister George Heyman. The 75-year-old Heyman said his decision stems from a desire to slow down after a long career in politics and environmental and labor activism. He said he could not speak for his colleagues regarding their motivations for not seeking re-election.

Weaver’s comments followed a news conference on Friday where Premier Eby expressed surprise at Weaver’s potential alignment with the leader of the B.C. Conservatives. The Conservative leader recently stated he would prohibit the teaching of climate science in classrooms, a stance that seems contradictory to Weaver’s background as an internationally respected climate scientist.

The decisions of the veteran ministers come at a critical time for the NDP, raising questions about the party’s direction and Eby’s leadership approach as the election approaches. The impact of these departures on the upcoming election and the party’s internal dynamics remains to be seen.
