Hot weekend in store for Fraser Valley residents

Jul 12, 2024 | 10:14 AM

CHILLIWACK — Another hot summer weekend lies ahead for the Fraser Valley as a high-pressure ridge continues to dominate weather patterns in British Columbia’s southwest corner.

While not as hot as the previous weekend, conditions will be much warmer than usual. Environment Canada says the average temperature in Chilliwack and Abbotsford for July 12 is 24 C. Temperatures are forecast to be 5 C or 6 C higher through the weekend and into next week. In fact, highs are expected to return to the 30 C range by late next week.

Authorities are worried about the impact the hot weather could have on residents across the province. The BC Wildfire Service is hopeful a campfire ban will reduce the threat of fires across the province over the weekend.

The wildfire danger rating shifted dramatically from the start of the week when the province was dominated by low danger ratings. Just a few days later, the ratings across the province are now dominated by high and extreme ratings.

Thursday (Jul. 11) the Metro Vancouver Regional District ended the ground-level ozone Air Quality Advisory that went into effect over the Fraser Valley on July 8. It said air quality had improved due to cooler temperatures in the region. However, the hotter temperatures predicted for late next week could lead to future Air Quality Advisories for the region.

Meantime Abbotsford is reminding residents that Stage 1 watering restrictions are in place during the hot spell. Homeowners can water their lawns just once a week. Even number addresses can water on Saturday while odd-numbered addresses can water Sunday. Lawns set up with automated watering can operate from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Manual watering is allowed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Chilliwack is also in stage 1 of residential lawn watering. Lawn and garden sprinkling is allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays for homes with even-numbered addresses. Odd number addresses can only water on Thursdays and Sundays. In addition, watering can only occur between the hours of 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
