AGASSIZ — Three people have died, including an infant, after a vehicle and tractor trailer collided on Lougheed Highway in Agassiz earlier this week.

According to a statement from Sgt. Andy Lot, Agassiz RCMP, Emergency Health Services and Agassiz Fire were dispatched on Tuesday, July 9 at 3:27 a.m. for the report of a serious motor vehicle incident. Police say a vehicle and tractor trailer collided head on, causing the highway to be shut down. Lougheed Highway re-opened Tuesday night at approximately 5:00 p.m. and is operating with no delays today.

The vehicle was occupied by a family of three and the tractor trailer by one person.

The two adults in the vehicle were pronounced deceased on scene. The third, an infant, was airlifted to hospital, where they passed away a few hours later, despite the heroic efforts of first responders and hospital staff.

The driver of tractor trailer did not suffer any injuries.

Sgt. Lot says Agassiz RCMP is working with Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) to determine the cause of this tragic incident. Alcohol or drugs are not suspected as a cause.
