ABBOTSFORD — A City of Abbotsford spokesperson says a fire damaged a large commercial building on South Fraser Way early Monday morning on Canada Day (July 1).

According to a statement from Melissa Godbout, spokesperson for the City of Abbotsford, Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was dispatched at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1 for the report of a structure fire in the 33000 block of South Fraser Way. On arrival, crews discovered heavy smoke coming from the lower floor of a large commercial structure.

Godbout says the fire was fully extinguished and crews were able to protect neighbouring structures from fire extension. There was heavy smoke and fire damage to the furniture business, 5 Corners Furniture & Appliances. Several other businesses in the building were also affected by smoke and water damage. The building was vacant at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
