VANCOUVER — Fraser Valley Today has learned that Vancouver-based Jim Pattison Group has acquired a U.S. grocery chain comprised of nearly 200 supermarkets in California and Nevada.

According to two published reports, the Jim Pattison Group (JPG) has acquired the The Save Mart Companies, a business that operates 194 stores in eastern and Central California and in Nevada. The stores operate under three brands of Save Mart (79 stores), Lucky (61 stores) and FoodMaxx (54 stores).

Save Mart originated in 1952 and employs roughly 13,000 people. Its Save Mart and Lucky banners are full service conventional supermarkets while FoodMaxx is a warehouse-style discount store concept.

Save Mart executive chairman Shane Sampson will report directly to the JPG corporate office in Vancouver, but the Save Mart team will work closely with the Pattison Food Group team to identify and optimize best practices and operating synergies that will best align with Save Mart and Pattison Food Group.
