AGASSIZ — Right after school recesses for the summer in SD78, the District of Kent will hold a free community event entitled “Slide into Summer” later this week at the Ferny Coombe Pool, 6820 Pioneer Avenue, along with free hot dogs.

The free event happens Friday, June 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ferny Coombe Pool (6820 Pioneer Ave), and will feature an inflatable slide, pool games, pool crafts, and barbecue for the community. Super Valu, an Agassiz supermarket, has generously donated hot dogs and buns for the BBQ again this year.

The Ferny Coombe Pool, first built in 1978, will be replaced by the $23.4 million Lets’mot Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre in Agassiz. Construction broke ground earlier this month. The District of Kent estimates that site works will begin in early July 2024, with a draft project timeline of a 20-month construction period. The new aquatic centre will be a 27,000-square foot facility, connected to the Community Recreation & Cultural Centre, and feature such indoor amenities as an eight-lane lap pool, leisure pool, whirlpool, steam and sauna, spectator viewing area, activity space, community room, lifeguard station, and universal and gender-specific change rooms,
