FVRD encounters HR challenges as applicants flake out during the recruitment process

CHILLIWACK — The Fraser Valley Regional District says it continues to experience challenges around recruitment due to a lack of experienced candidates or people flaking out during the application process.

In a staff memo authored by Tina Mooney, FVRD manager of human resources and safety services, the district says it has posted 22 positions in 2024 thus far, but applicants aren’t doing themselves any favours by failing to respond to interview invites, rescheduling interviews multiple times, canceling interviews on the date of the interview, or failing to show up for interviews without notice.

“Often times if the listing of applicants needs to be revisited late in the process, if there are any suitable candidates remaining, they have already found a position elsewhere,” Mooney said. “FVRD staff are continually looking for ways to improve the recruitment process. All of these scenarios impact staff’s busy schedules and ultimately leads to delays in filling positions.Often times if the listing of applicants needs to be revisited late in the process, if there are any suitable candidates remaining, they have already found a position elsewhere.”

In an effort to bolster its hiring practices, FVRD says it conducts a thorough review of each job description with the relevant department manager and/or union prior to posting the position to ensure that the knowledge, skills and abilities are current, so that FVRD can attract qualified candidates.
