G.W. Graham varsity football coach Ryk Piché steps down to pursue a new coaching opportunity

CHILLIWACK — G.W. Graham varsity head football coach Ryk Piché has stepped down from his position with the school to join the Valley Huskers program next week.

“Super excited for this new opportunity. I’m now moving on to the @valleyhuskers football program. Can’t wait to see you all next week,” Coach Piché wrote online.

Coach Piché told Fraser Valley Today over Facebook Messenger Friday afternoon (June 21) that he has been asked to work as an assistant to the offensive coordinator with the Huskers.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be asked to work on offence as an assistant to the OC,” Coach Piché said. “I just want to coach and fit in where need be. Super grateful Head Coach Reist gave me this opportunity.”

G.W. Graham has had a winning program that ranks among the best in British Columbia in recent years. The Grizzlies won the junior varsity football title in 2013, 2014 and 2018, and the senior varsity championship in 2021. It advanced to the provincial championship in 2022 but lost to Vancouver College in the title game. G.W. Graham advanced to the playoffs in 2023 with a 10-win season.

“I’m happy to leave the G.W. program in a high standard of winning,” Coach Piché said. “We did things last year that haven’t been done before, and had an extremely successful season finishing 3rd in B.C. with a 10-2 record. I wish them the best.”

Roughly one year ago, G.W. Graham athletic director Jake Mouritzen announced in June 2023 that Piché had been named as the new senior varsity football coach for the Grizzlies. In a Facebook post last year from Amber McKay, Mouritzen was quoted as saying at the time, “I am very excited and honoured to announce our program’s fourth senior varsity coach, Ryk Piché. Coach [Piché ] brings years of football experience, a passion for the game, and a sense of caring for his student athletes that I know will assist us in taking one more step in solidifying our spot in Canadian high school football as one of the very best programs in the country. Please help me welcome head Coach Piché to his new position.”
