Off-duty Chilliwack firefighter pitches in to stop garage fire at Chilliwack home from spreading
CHILLIWACK — An off-duty Chilliwack firefighter is being credited with intervening quickly after a fire started in a garage at an Eastern Hillsides home Tuesday afternoon (June 18) in Chilliwack.
According to a news release from Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar, Chilliwack firefighters were dispatched just before 5 p.m. to a possible structure fire originating from a garage in the 50000 block of Ledgestone Place. Minar says approximately 24 firefighters from Halls 1 (Cheam Avenue), 2 (Rosedale), 4 (South Sumas), and 6 (Greendale) responded. Upon arrival, they witnessed light smoke coming from the garage and confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the building. Crews quickly knocked down the remaining fire, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the home and reducing overall damage, Minar said.
As fate would have it, an off-duty Chilliwack Fire Department firefighter was nearby and significantly minimized the damage using a garden hose.
“His quick actions unquestionably altered the course of the fire, preventing a much greater loss before the first crews arrived,” Minar wrote in her news release.
