Fraser Valley churches in Chilliwack court this week to argue Dr. Bonnie Henry granted preferential treatment
CHILLIWACK — The Calgary-based Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom says Fraser Valley churches will be in court this week and next week to argue that B.C.’s top doctor engaged in preferential treatment during COVID-19 lockdowns that adversely impacted certain faith groups.
In a news release from the advocacy group, JCCF announced Thursday (June 13) that area churches will argue, in a 10-day hearing in Chilliwack, that B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry assigned preferential treatment to some faith groups over others when she considered requests to be exempted from a total ban on in-person worship services during the pandemic.
According to JCCF’s news release, the churches argue that their prosecution for violating public health orders constitutes an abuse of process and should be stayed, or stopped. JCCF says lawyers for the churches will present evidence that Dr. Henry allegedly acted “dishonestly and in bad faith” while banning in-person worship services in 2020 and 2021, granting immediate exemptions to Jewish synagogues while ignoring exemption requests from Muslims and Christians.
The hearing began on Thursday, June 13 in Courtroom 205 at the Chilliwack Law Courts, 46085 Yale Rd, Chilliwack, BC. The hearing will conclude on Thursday, June 27.
