CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Salvation Army says thousands of Chilliwack families are accessing the Salvation Army Community Food Bank each month, but it’s nearly out of food.

According to a social media post Thursday (June 13), the Salvation Army reports that it only has two weeks left of food in its food bank inventory.

Literally, it has two skids or less of every item, with its most glaring shortage being canned vegetables (0.25 skids remaining).

“Over 6,000 families are accessing the Food Bank each month,” more than ever before,” the Chilliwack Salvation Army wrote on Facebook. “Chilliwack, you have had our back for the last 100 years, are you able to help us now?”

Anyone that wants to help can donate at www.chilliwacksa.ca or by coming to the Chilliwack Care & Share Centre at 45746 Yale Road.

The Salvation Army Community Food Bank is a member of Food Banks B.C. (FBBC) and affiliated member of the Canadian Association of Food Banks and is the only authorized food bank in the Chilliwack area.

The Salvation Army says the Chilliwack Community Food Bank has been an active participant in Chilliwack for over 25 years and continues to fill a vital need in our community for individuals who are unemployed or underemployed.

Of the thousands of people being assisted through its food bank, soup kitchen and shelter every month, 30 per cent of those are children under the age of 18 years.

“Each of these needy families would have gone hungry without the generous support and kindness of our community,” the Chilliwack Salvation Army wrote.

The Chilliwack Food Bank is open Monday to Friday from 9:30-noon and 1-3 p.m.
