ABBOTSFORD — The City of Abbotsford has opened nominations for its civic recognition awards, honouring outstanding lifetime achievements, excellence, and dedication to the community. This year’s awards include the Order of Abbotsford, the Community Champion Achievement Award, and the Community Recognition Award.

The Order of Abbotsford recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Abbotsford and its residents. The award spans various fields including culture, public service, environment, business, heritage conservation, and sports. Recipients have their names recorded in the Order of Abbotsford Merit Book, maintained by the Office of the Mayor. Ann Penner, a long-time resident known for her extensive work as a teacher, coach, mentor, and volunteer, was the 2023 recipient.

The Community Champion Achievement Award is presented to individuals, groups, or organizations that have achieved national or international recognition in areas such as academia, sports, arts, and culture or have performed notable deeds benefiting the community. Recipients have their names engraved on a paving stone placed along Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail within the Community Champions pavilion. Last year’s award went to Nick Taylor, the Canadian Open Champion.

The Community Recognition Award honours those who have provided significant service or contributions to the Abbotsford community. In 2023, the award was given to the BC Seniors Games Directors for their dedication and commitment to the successful Abbotsford 55+ BC Summer Games.
