Storm expected to bring dangerous conditions to some Lower Mainland rivers
VANCOUVER – A moisture-laden weather system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and unusually high flows to the Capilano and Seymour rivers starting Sunday morning and lasting until early Monday. Metro Vancouver officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution near the rivers.
Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Metro Vancouver area and the Fraser Valley, including the North Shore, predicting up to 60 millimetres of rain. The most intense showers are expected from Sunday afternoon into the evening.
The Capilano and Seymour rivers are known for rapid water level changes, influenced primarily by weather. The Capilano River, for instance, can rise over five metres at certain points, with water speeds exceeding 21 kilometres per hour. The conditions can pose significant risks to those near the river.
Recreational activities near these rivers, including Capilano River Regional Park, should be approached with extreme caution. Visitors are advised to stay on designated trails, follow all posted warnings, and monitor river conditions closely. Entering the river is strongly discouraged due to the dangers of hypothermia, injury, or worse from sudden surges, fast-moving water, and debris.
