RIDGE MEADOWS — A man is dead following a shooting in Maple Ridge late Friday (May 31) afternoon. In a news release, Ridge Meadows RCMP says officers responded to a report of gunfire at approximately 5:12 p.m. near 223 Street and Lougheed Highway.

First responders found the victim with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts from BC Emergency Health Services and front-line officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a male suspect fleeing the area. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation and is working closely with the Ridge Meadows RCMP, the RCMP Forensic Identification Service, and the BC Coroners Service.

Initial evidence suggests the incident was isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public. IHIT investigators have identified the victim but are withholding his name pending family notification.

“Investigators will remain in the area canvassing for witnesses and collecting security camera footage,” said Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “We are asking any witnesses or anyone with dash-camera footage from the area, to contact IHIT immediately.”

Anyone who was in the vicinity of 223 Street and Lougheed Highway between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., or anyone with information about the incident, is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
