ABBOTSFORD — Fraser Valley realtor Merrick Mateazzi has been acclaimed as the BC United candidate in the Abbotsford-Mission riding, pitting himself against a realtor and the B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food in this year’s provincial election.

According to a news release from BC United, Mateazzi is a devoted husband and father of three children who has deep connections to Abbotsford and Mission. He grew up in Abbotsford and built meaningful ties to the Fraser Valley through school, sports and business over the decades.

Mateazzi will be challenged by fellow realtor Reann Gasper, representing the B.C. Conservative Party, and NDP MLA Pam Alexis, the current Minister of Agriculture and Food, in the Abbotsford-Mission riding. The next provincial election is October 19, 2024.

Mateazzi graduated from W.J. Mouat Secondary in Abbotsford in 2005, cherishing his public school education and the teachers who inspired his commitment to self-development and continuous growth. After graduation, he futher developed his business acumen, interpersonal, negotiation, and sales skills, winning numerous awards in the RV industry. Following his passion for growth, he entered the real estate industry, attended UBC Sauder School of Business, and began his career as a member of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. In his first year, he won ‘Rookie of the Year’ as the top new agent at Landmark Realty. Within two years, he became a Medallion Realtor, ranking in the top 10 per cent for transactional volume, and has maintained this status for six consecutive years.

In 2013, Merrick married his wife Sydney, and they have since grown their family to include Matteo, Elizabeth, and Milo, along with their lively Golden Retriever, Jack. Having three young children under the age of 10 motivated him to consider a move into politics.

“He is determined to leave his children with a province that offers more opportunities and growth than are available now,” BC United wrote in a news release. “Merrick has established himself as a person of integrity in business. Anyone who knows him will attest to his impeccable reputation. He consistently puts the needs of his clients before his own, and he aims to do the same for his constituents. Merrick’s dedication and effective effort will bring proper representation and results to the Legislative Assembly for the Abbotsford-Mission riding.”

Mateazzi says British Columbia used to be the best province in the country to live in, but BC’s standing has deteriorated.

“We used to be the best province in Canada to live in, and now professionals are leaving in droves due to mismanagement and failed policies from David Eby’s NDP,” Mateazzi said. “I cannot stand by and watch the promise of beautiful British Columbia erode. The B.C. that I want my children to grow up in is worth fighting for, and I am excited to get to work in creating the bold change our community deserves.”

As the son of an Italian immigrant and one of five children, Mateazzi faced financial hardships throughout his childhood. At just seven years old, he took on his first paper route with his siblings, and by 15, he was delivering newspapers for six routes in his area. BC United says these early experiences instilled a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the opportunities available in British Columbia.

Mateazzi attended Ten-Broeck Elementary, where a field trip to Victoria and a tour of the Legislative buildings ignited his passion for governance. Meeting with the premier and Members of the Legislative Assembly at the time and learning about their work ignited a passion for public service that grew over the years.

“Merrick Matteazzi embodies the values and dedication needed to bring about positive change in Abbotsford-Mission,” said BC United Leader Kevin Falcon. “His commitment to his community and his passion to fix the crises in health care, cost-of-living and public safety that have been ignored by the NDP make him an excellent candidate. We are thrilled to have him on our team and confident in his ability to represent the best interests of his constituents.”
