CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says a hold and secure was briefly in place Tuesday morning at Little Mountain Elementary in Chilliwack, but the incident has since been resolved.

Cpl. Kiener told Fraser Valley Today over the phone at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday (May 21) that police implemented the hold and secure due to something that happened away from the school, not on school property itself. They did so out of an abundance of caution.

No one was arrested and there was no risk to the public or students, Cpl. Kiener pointed out. No other details were provided about the nature of the incident.

According to an email from Little Mountain Elementary principal Carolyn Ingham that was sent to parents, and obtained by Fraser Valley Today, Little Mountain was placed under a hold and secure by the Chilliwack RCMP for approximately 45 minutes from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

“Our staff and students were notified of this event and everyone was safe and calm during this time,” Ingham’s email to parents stated.

A hold and secure occurs when there is a police or emergency situation outside of the school, and is not related to the school itself.

“Our students and staff were free to move around the school as normal,” Ingham wrote in her email to parents, “but we were asked to stay inside and keep our outside doors locked.”

Ingham expressed thanks to police for maintaining public safety.

“We are appreciative of our Chilliwack RCMP for keeping our schools safe,” Ingham said.
