
Crime numbers falling in Chilliwack
CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack crime statistics are down over the first three months of 2024 according to a report that will go before Chilliwack City Council Tuesday (May 21). Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment Superintendent Davy Lee is scheduled to present the report to elected officials.
The report reveals overall property crimes are down 22 per cent from 424 in 2023 to 330 in 2024. Auto-related crimes make up the largest area of property crimes. Vehicle thefts dropped 27 per cent over the first quarter when compared to a year earlier while the number of reported thefts from vehicles was down a whopping 37 per cent, falling from 198 to 125.
Council will also be told the category of Crimes Against Persons has seen an eight per cent drop from 596 calls to 551 in the first quarter of 2024. Assaults are down 11 per cent and Robberies have fallen 22 per cent according to the report.
RCMP issued more than 1,400 violation tickets in the first three months of the year including 64 tickets in school zones. Officers checked more than four thousand vehicles over the first quarter of the year.
