CHILLIWACK — Just when you thought winter was in the rear view mirror, Old Man Winter might be making a cameo between Thursday night and Saturday morning.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement advising of likely snow accumulations over the mountain passes east of Hope and in parts of the B.C. Interior.

According to a statement dated Wednesday (May 15) at 2:27 p.m., snowfall amounts of 2-5 centimetres are expected over the Coquihalla Highway, Okanagan Connector, Allison Pass (Highway 3 west of Manning Park), along with Kootenay Paass, Begbie Summit and Rogers Pass. Locally higher amounts are possible.

Snow is expected to fall Thursday to Friday morning and possibly early Saturday morning, Environment Canada noted.

The national weather forecaster says an upper low will bring a cool airmass to higher elevations of the BC Interior late Thursday into this long weekend. Colder air along with precipitation means the mountain passes can expect a dusting of snow overnight Thursday and possibly overnight Friday.

For Allison Pass, the Coquihalla Highway and the Okanagan Connector, snow can be expected above 1100 metres. At Rogers Pass, snow is expected above 1300 metres and at Begbie Summit snow is anticipated above 1000 metres. For Kootenay Pass, snow is expected above 1400 metres.

Transportation routes could be impacted. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
