CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Department personnel and Chilliwack RCMP were dispatched Wednesday morning after a bush caught fire in front of a furniture business on Luckakuck Way in Chilliwack.

Witness Michelle Vander Vlis says she called 9-1-1 dispatch after seeing a fire started by a homeless individual with a buggy.

The fire occurred at 45310 Luckakuck Way in front of Hometown Furniture. It did not spread to the furniture store building, Vander Vlis said.

Vander Vlis reports Chilliwack RCMP and Chilliwack Fire Department personnel showed up six minutes from when they were alerted to the fire.

It’s not known if the person who caused the fire was located by police.

“I couldn’t tell,” Vander Vlis said when asked whether police located the individual who caused the fire. “The police came and shut the road down. All I know is he was pushing a buggy and trying to stop the fire, but it was too dry and it overcame him in minutes.”

The Chilliwack Fire Department has not been sending news releases about fire incidents lately, and did not respond to a previous media inquiry about a patio fire that occurred at 44550 Freshwater Drive earlier this month.
