CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack is seeking designs for its upcoming street banner program, and the successful applicant will receive an honorarium of $2,500 for their original design work.

The city wrote in a social media post last week that designers and artists are welcome to submit their proposals for original banner artwork that will be mounted throughout Chilliwack. Banners will be exhibited starting this summer, generating an opportunity for a vibrant visual presence throughout the community.

Three applicants will be shortlisted for the “This is Chilliwack” call-out program. The selected applicant will receive an honorarium of $2,500 for their banner design; the two remaining applicants are set to receive $250. Fabrication and installation costs are covered by the City and are not included in this fee.

The City of Chilliwack has taken the position that public art increases the vibrancy and livability of the community, and fosters a sense of pride in public places.

“Public art has the power to energize and enhance our public spaces, make us think, and transform where we live, work and play,” the city wrote on its website.

The Chilliwack Public Art Policy (CPAP) was adopted by Chilliwack council on April 1, 2014. The purpose of the policy is to promote and facilitate the integration of public art throughout Chilliwack. Establishing a public art policy was one of the objectives set out in the Official Community Plan update, which was completed in 2014.

The deadline to apply for the public art submission call-out program is this Wednesday, May 8.
