CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack River Valley Trail is benefitting from a pair of improvement projects that have received funding from a Trans Canada Trail grant program. Through the Trail Care Grant program, the Trails Society of BC and the Backcountry Horsemen of BC each received $1,250 dollars to support improvement work.

The Trails Society of BC will be removing branches and tree limbs that have been blown down, improving drainage along the trail, repairing bridge decking and curbs, trimming brush encroaching on the trail and affecting the line-of-sight for cyclists. Improvement work will also include adding Trans Canada Trail signage along the path.

The Backcountry Horsemen of BC is using the funds to improve safety in the area. The money is targeted to purchase materials for bridge deck platforms to prevent slipping in wet or freezing conditions.

In British Columbia, the Trans Canada Trail earmarked $22,750 for trail projects through its Trail Care Grant program. This year’s grants address a variety of needs including debris cleanup, erosion control, and safety enhancements.

“These grants support the Trail where it really counts – at the local level. Trail groups can decide what their community needs most, while making their mark on this incredible national trail network,” says Mathieu Roy, CEO of Trans Canada Trail.

Across Canada, the Trans Canada Trail approved 221 grants totalling more than $250 thousand for projects similar to the projects in Chilliwack. Trail Care grants are just one of the funding programs provided by Trans Canada Trail. It also works with trail groups on several larger projects throughout the year.

The Trans Canada Trail runs from coast to coast to coast, connecting more than 15 thousand communities. The organization that oversees the trail is a registered charity.
