Chilliwack Fire Dept. bids farewell to 23-year firefighter

CHILLIWACK — After a career spanning over two decades as a firefighter and distinguished brigade chief, the Chilliwack Fire Department is bidding farewell to one of its finest men in uniform.

Monday, April 22 marked the end of a 23-year legacy of service for Brigade Chief Robert Vissers of Fire Hall No. 4, located at 45433 South Sumas Road. Vissers began his tenure with the Chilliwack Fire Department as a paid on-call firefighter before becoming a career member and later returning to the floor as a brigade chief in 2008. Vissers is being hailed by Chilliwack Fire as an integral part of the department’s journey.

“His leadership style, rooted in leading by example, has been a guiding light for us all,” Chilliwack Fire Department wrote of Brigade Chief Vissers. “Brigade Chief Vissers’ commitment to excellence, coupled with his dedication to new recruit training, has shaped not only the future of our department but also the lives of countless firefighters and community members.”

Vissers demonstrated a steady demeanor during the most challenging or stressful situations. When asked, Vissers credited his crew for the experience of serving as a firefighter and building friendships that often withstand the years.

“As he embarks on this new chapter of his life, Brigade Chief Vissers leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, camaraderie, and unwavering dedication,” Chilliwack Fire Department said in a statement. “Brigade Chief Vissers leaves with fond memories and a feeling of honor to hold the position of Brigade Chief.”

The department extended wholehearted gratitude to Robert’s wife Julie for her unwavering support throughout his 23-year career.

“Behind every firefighter is a strong support system, and Julie has been an invaluable part of his journey,” Chilliwack Fire Dept. wrote. “Brigade Chief Vissers, your service has been nothing short of exceptional, and it has been an honor to serve alongside you. As you step into retirement, know that your impact will continue to be felt within our department and the community at large. We wish you all the happiness and fulfillment in this new chapter. Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement.”
