New secondary school in Mission given green light
MISSION — Plans are moving ahead for an enhanced and expanded Mission Senior Secondary School. In a news release Friday (Apr. 5), the Ministry of Education and Child Care announced funding has been secured to build a new, larger school that will accommodate 1,500 students, a capacity increase of 250 students from the school it is replacing.
Rachna Singh, Minister of Education and Child Care, says the move is another sign of the government’s commitment to providing safe and modern learning environments for all students in British Columbia. “We have been building, expanding, and upgrading schools throughout B.C.,” said Singh. “Our government is working to ensure all B.C. students can learn, grow, and thrive in safe and modern schools.”
The new secondary school will feature an Indigenous education centre and a neighborhood learning centre for community use and child care services.
Shelley Carter, board chair for Mission School District, believes the school will provide students with an outstanding learning facility across many levels. “This initiative promises a state-of-the-art learning environment for students and support for educators. The facility will celebrate community diversity and advance reconciliation efforts with First Nations.
